Local energy for a global community - at Newo Global Energy, we believe that there is plenty of sunlight for everyone, and we've created a not-for-profit Alberta company to bring that to life. By working together, we can shape energy systems that work for the good of local communities, and for the planet too.

Our Red Deer Branch is hosting quarterly Solar Info Sessions (on the equinoxes and solstices) featuring different topics emerging in Alberta's renewable energy sector. The summer solstice session will feature the Iron & Earth campaign, and a (tentative) tour of the Red Deer College's new Alternative Energy Innovation Lab!

Canadian Cities Fossil Fuel Workers MapFor Canada to transition to a clean economy, it has to leave fossil fuels behind. And certain parts of the country will have a harder time than others, according to a report from the Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives.

“Making decarbonization work for workers,” which highlights how the transition can be done relatively smoothly, names cities in Canada that have the highest number of fossil fuel workers.

The highest concentration of fossil fuel workers in Canada is in Wood Buffalo, Alta. at 31.2 per cent, followed by Cold Lake, Alta., at 16.7 per cent, Lloydminster, Alta./Sask., (16.5 per cent), Estevan, Sask., (15.2 per cent), Sylvan Lake, Alta., (14.2 per cent), Grande Prairie, Alta., (12 per cent), Weyburn, Sask., (10.7 per cent), Fort St. John, B.C., (10.4 per cent), Brooks, Alta., (10 per cent), and Red Deer, Alta. (7.5 per cent).

Here are the cities with the highest share of fossil fuel employees in their workforce:

What is Iron & Earth?

Iron & Earth

Iron & Earth is led by oilsands workers committed to incorporating more renewable energy projects into their work scope. They created this organization during the spring of 2015 when oil prices started to fall. They were losing work and conversations about needing to diversify our energy grid was dominating their lunch conversations on the job site. This moment acted as a catalyst for them to realize a shared vision for a sustainable energy future for Canada - one that would ensure the health and equity of workers, our families, communities, economy, and the environment. They founded Iron and Earth as a platform to engage in renewable energy development issues, and to empower themselves to advocate for an energy future we can be proud of creating. Their membership has since grown to include workers from a variety of industrial trades, including boilermakers, electricians, pipe fitters, ironworkers, and labourers.
