Water Testing at Piper Creek

Tuesday, June 5 - 6:00pm to 9:00pm, Piper Creek Restoration Agriculture Project Site - 40th Ave, south Red Deer

AWQA

Join us as Trout Unlimited Canada - Central Chapter and the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance assess water quality in Piper Creek at the Piper Creek Restoration Agriculture Project site to commemorate Alberta Water Quality Awareness Day!

Did you know that over 80% of the water in our river comes from overland flow (i.e., precipitation)? That means just about everything we do on the land affects the quality of our water!

Over the last few years, data loggers placed along Piper Creek have been measuring water quantity metrics (flow, temperature, etc.) and water quality testing field days have been held to keep track of the state of this section of the Red Deer RIver watershed.

Come and learn about what's been happening and how our project is helping to improve the water quality now and well into the future. You'll be able to get some hands-on opportunity to interpret the data logger info and conduct simple water quality testing (e.g., pH, dissovled oxygen, turbidity, etc.) with the experts from Trout Unlimited Canada and the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance!

This opportunity was made possible thanks to funding from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation.

About AWQA

Alberta Water Quality Awareness (AWQA) is a province-wide program focused on increasing people’s awareness and understanding of water quality and watershed health, through hands-on water quality testing. AWQA participants use water quality test kits to get outside and explore the health of their local waterways. Using their test kits, participants gather basic information about the health of Alberta’s surface waterbodies and then contribute what they find to our online database and watershed map.

Why is water monitoring important?

Increasing demands placed on waterbodies in our province together with the threat of pollution and environmental damage has made water management increasingly important. The first step to effective management is improved knowledge and awareness.

By participating in this province-wide community monitoring event, Albertans are:

  • Gaining an understanding of the health of their local waters
  • Working together to create a province-wide snapshot of basic water quality
  • Helping to build an ethic of stewardship and water protection
  • Becoming involved in their watersheds at a local level
  • Getting outside and having fun while exploring the health of our watersheds
