ReThink Red Deer and Green Calgary are teaming up to host a Community Rain Barrel Sale in Red Deer!
Green Calgary's annual Rain Barrel & Composter Sales have sold thousands of those famous blue and white barrels to Calgary homeowners throughout the city - resulting in millions of gallons of water conserved every year!
Now they are helping other communities to tap into this successful model while teaching people how to be water conscious and make the most of the free rain that falls from the sky. All proceeds from the sale go right back into providing innovative environmental programs in our local community.
The City of Red Deer recently launched a rain barrel rebate program to get Red Deer residents harvesting rain. As a result, residents can apply to receive 50% (of the barrel cost) or up to $50 off their utility bill. It's on a first come, first serve basis with a limited amount of rebates still available so now's the time to get those barrels to help with watering your lawns and gardens!
Why harvest rain water? By using rain barrels at home, you can help conserve water and save money. Rain barrels are low maintenance, easy to use and the water collected is chlorine-free with a natural temperature that won't shock plants. Capturing storm water at home also helps reduce the flow of water back to our rivers, reducing the flow of contaminants while supporting flood mitigation efforts. Plus using a rain barrel means that less water needs to treated, reducing demand on water treatment facilities, which in the end saves us all money.

Details:
- 50 gallon barrel available in blue or white
- Reused food grade barrel
- Approximately 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide
- Closed top barrel with 4” mesh opening
- 2 outlets near the top: one for overflow and one for connecting another barrel (second outlet can be capped off if using barrel alone)
- One outlet at the bottom for retrieving rain water
- Hose kit includes 24 feet of hose, a metal clamp, and extra adaptor
Set up:
- Place barrel on a sturdy support (such as cinder blocks), high enough to allow a watering can or pail under the tap
- Cut downspout so that it fits directly over the mesh opening of the barrel (you may need to use a downspout attachment to direct the water into the barrel)
- Fasten the hose with the clamp provided to one of the top outlets and direct the hose into a nearby tree, shrub or garden (can be cut to desired length)
