International Permaculture Day 2019

International Permaculture Day (IPD) on the first Sunday in May (or thereabouts) is a day of celebration and action for permaculture around the world. It is a day when visitors can see these myriad initiatives, ask questions of their developers and decide for themselves whether the permaculture design system has relevance to the challenges we face and to creating communities that are resilient in the face of undesirable and unforeseeable impacts.

Now in its 10th year, International Permaculture Day has grown rapidly from its roots as a local Australian initiative to a global day of permaculture celebrated in over 35 countries.

ReThink Red Deer is showcases its Piper Creek Restoration Agriculture Project in support of IPD. A site tour is available at 12:30pm (for approx. 90 minutes) featuring the practice of restoration agriculture through the 15,000sq.ft Canada 150 Food Forest and Pollinator Garden, integrated pest (weed) management with grazing goats, and riparian plantings for beaver habitat restoration.

Please visit the project Facebook page for more pics and details.

Meet & Bleet with the Goats from Baah'd Plant Management & Reclamation

They’re ba-a-a-a-a-a-ack!  Everyone is invited to join The City of Red Deer Parks Department in welcoming the goats back to Red Deer. Stop by to visit the goats on Sunday, September 29 and chat with City staff about weed control and management of the ecologically-sensitive areas in our parks and green spaces.  Children are welcome to pet the goats. This event is in support of the timberframe barn raising and 3rd annual Garlic City Market (running alongside the market) and parking is available on site. To keep the goats safe and comfortable please consider leaving pets at home or be sure to keep pets on a leash.

Open Farm Days

Alberta Open Farm Days is a weekend that brings Albertans together, and we want you to be our guest. You’ll come away knowing your rural neighbours a little bit better and how food gets from the farm to your table.

Tours run Saturday, August 17 or Sunday August 18 while more than 90 farms, ranches and ag-tourism operators open their gates and invite visitors to share in local stories, see on-farm demonstrations, and purchase locally grown and produced products.

ReThink Red Deer is showcasing its Piper Creek Restoration Agriculture Project on the Saturday and will have premium worm castings and organic garlic scapes available for sale. Three site tours will be available throughout the day - at 10:00am, 12:30pm, and 3:00pm (subject to change) - featuring the practice of restoration agriculture through the 15,000sq.ft Canada 150 Food Forest and Pollinator Garden, integrated pest (weed) management with grazing goats, and riparian plantings for beaver habitat restoration.

Please visit the project Facebook page for more pics and details.

Alberta Culture Days

Alberta Culture Days began in 2008 as Alberta Arts Day, a one-day event to recognize the value of Alberta's arts and cultural communities. There were 100 events held in 30 communities across the province, and a flagship celebration at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. Since then, it has expanded into a vibrant, three-day, provincewide celebration that has helped inspire the creation of Culture Days - a pan-Canadian movement to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Alberta Culture Days 2019, September 27, 28 & 29, will continue to encourage all Albertans to experience how culture contributes to a prosperous, vibrant society.

At the Piper Creek Restoration Agriculture site we host Garlic City Market on the Alberta Culture Days weekend.
